Ten Welshmen formed the nucleus of the series-clinching British Lions side in Australia four months ago. Nine of them will now pull on familiar red jerseys and listen to the instructions of the same coach that masterminded that Lions triumph, Warren Gatland.

But, while there is pride in helping the Lions end a 16-year wait for a series win, Wales are yet to prove they are truly big-game players.

Few would disagree with Gatland's assessment that Wales boast an array of world-class performers. Nonetheless, they have only once defeated a southern hemisphere giant in his six-year tenure.

Wales have not beaten Australia since 2008, South Africa since 1999 or New Zealand since 1953.

Even Lions and Wales captain Sam Warburton concedes: "You don't like to admit it but maybe it is psychological. Until you have done it in a Welsh shirt, it won't be the same. Until we beat a southern hemisphere side, we cannot call ourselves contenders for the World Cup."

South Africa are seldom anything other than teak-tough opposition and the Springboks impressed during the recent southern hemisphere championship, earning a record win in Australia and pushing New Zealand hard before losing a titanic title decider in Johannesburg.

They averaged almost four tries a game in the tournament but coach Heyneke Meyer wants improvements in defence. He is also keen to start adapting to the conditions that South Africa might face at the 2015 World Cup in England, saying: "The more rain the better."

Meyer praised the Welsh defence and it's hard to disagree with the assessment of Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards that Saturday's Test will be "gladiatorial" and "no place for the faint-hearted".

An intriguing sub-plot centres on Irish referee Alain Rolland, who officiates a Wales home game for the first time since controversially sending off Warburton for a dangerous tackle after 18 minutes of the 2011 World Cup semi-final against France. Wales lost 9-8, but Warburton says he has no problem with Rolland's decision.

He has more a pressing matter to deal with - namely helping Wales break their southern hemisphere hex.
